The pressure on the Metropolitan Police to solve this issue has driven the authorities to blame London’s surge of violent gang crimes on the growing popularity of drill, an underground genre of hip-hop. The Met claims that this music genre promotes violence and should be treated under the Terrorism Act. They make no distinction Fraser Myers explains, between words or creative expression and actual deeds. If censoring certain lyrics or videos is not the answer, does this focus on music distract from more complex social factors responsible for London’s gang culture?
