Hey guys! I received a request asking if there was a way to tie the running rya knot that was a little more secure than the original knot I created a tutorial for. Today I’ll quickly recap the original and then show you the second method.

This knot is used quite a bit in weaving and is also a fun one to incorporate into your macrame work, especially macra-weaves (macrame/weaving). I’ll show you how it looks with string and cotton frizz ribbon which gives it a little extra texture. If you like the look of this method then be sure to check back next week as I’ll be releasing a tutorial for a full macra-weave that uses this technique. If you enjoy this tutorial it would really help me out if you could hit that thumbs up button below, subscribe to my channel and leave a comment. Thanks so much. Let’s get started.

I would consider this a sample size which you can then increase in length and width if you’d like. This sample measures about 4 inches wide by about 3 inches long. Cut 6 pieces of 4mm rope in the colour warm taupe, each piece is 1 meter in length. Fold each piece in half and attach to your dowel using Lark’s Head knots.

This knot needs to be held up by something underneath it so I’ll tie a row of double half hitch knots (dhhks) at the bottom of my work. But first I’ll tie a row of ddhks at the top of my work just to secure my lark’s head knots in place - this roof dhhks is optional.

You can either tuck the ends of the filler cord into the back of your work or cut them off on the sides and then add a bit of glue to secure it.

Cut a piece of string that is 5.5 ft long. To tie the first method bring two loops around two filler cords and then pull them through the centre of those two filler cords. As you can see this method is not very secure as it is quite easy to pull the knots loose.

To tie the second method bring the string around the right side of the filler cord and create a loop then pull the string on the left through that loop. This method is a bit more secure - it will not come undone when you pull on the string on the right, instead it will tighten the knot.

I’ll repeat this process with cotton frizz ribbon, creating a smaller loop.

Use a tapestry needle to tuck in the ends of the string and ribbon into the back of your work by threading the ends through the back of the running rya knots.

Thanks so much for watching!
