Throttle Adaptation & H040 Deviation in Porsche Vehicles
Porsche vehicles may require a throttle adaptation following a service or throttle body cleaning. This is especially important when diagnostic data shows a significant H040 deviation in the negative range.

Understanding H040 Deviation
H040: Correction Factor, Mass Air Flow

This value reflects the difference between calculated and measured mass air flow.

The calculation uses:

Pressure before and after the throttle valve

Throttle valve angle

Mass air flow measured by the MAF sensor

Inputs from the tank vent valve and other correction factors

The deviation is shown as a percentage, with a maximum of ±49.99%.

Normal range: ±10%

Suspect a problem if deviation exceeds ±15%

Causes of Negative H040 Deviation
A negative deviation indicates the measured mass air flow is lower than expected at a given throttle angle.

Common causes:
Dirty throttle plate

Leaking throttle plate shaft

These conditions reduce the air entering the intake manifold, despite the throttle angle being open wider than expected.

Example:
A deviation of -23% suggests insufficient air mass relative to throttle angle—often due to buildup on the throttle plate.

Throttle Plate Cleaning & Adaptation Procedure
Vehicle Example: 2013 Porsche Panamera (970) with 3.5L engine

Pre-Cleaning Checklist:
Ensure engine is at room temperature

Use a coating-safe throttle body cleaner

Prevent debris from entering the intake manifold

Cleaning:
Inspect throttle plate and clean if buildup is present

In our Panamera, the initial H040 reading was -23%, prompting cleaning

Throttle Adaptation:
Perform throttle adaptation after cleaning

Post-adaptation, the H040 deviation improved to -3%, which is within the normal range
