The Missing Rainbow Paint
Elmo the furry red monster was having a fantastic day painting. He had just received a brand new box of rainbow crayons and was eager to draw a gigantic, cheerful picture for his friend Big Bird.
He noticed that the Yellow crayon was his favorite. It made the best sunny circles and happy stars! Elmo worried that if he used it too much, it would be gone.
So, Elmo decided he would only use the yellow crayon for his picture. He kept it hidden deep inside his fur pocket and only pulled it out when no one was looking. He finished his own bright, beautiful picture, which was mostly yellow.
Later, Elmo went to play near the library tree, where he saw his friends Cookie Monster and Grover struggling to share a small handful of dull, used crayons. They wanted to draw a picture of a field of sunflowers for a sick friend, but their yellow crayon was worn down to a tiny, useless nub.
"Oh, look!" sighed Cookie Monster. "No yellow! How me draw happy flower without sunshine color?"
Elmo looked at his perfect, unused yellow crayon, tucked safely away. He realized that his beautiful picture was just for him, but the picture his friends were trying to draw was for someone else who needed cheering up.
He pulled the crayon from his pocket, walked over, and placed it right in the middle of their paper.
"Here you go, friends!" Elmo chirped. "Use my brightest yellow! You need it to make a happy picture for your friend."
Cookie Monster cheered, "YAY! Happy flower time!" and Grover smiled, "A truly wonderful thing you have done, Elmo!"
As Elmo watched them draw the big, golden sunflowers, the sunniest rays seemed to shine right out of the shared crayon, making Elmo feel warmer and happier than his solo, perfect picture ever could.
The Moral of the Story: The happiest things are the things you share. Keeping something precious all to yourself never feels as good as using it to bring joy or comfort to someone else.
