S1 – Ep 189 – Slagtersnek – An Exciting Gravel Road from Cradock to Cookhouse!

We planned to take this route when we left Cradock because we had not done many gravel roads on the trip thus far. And what an exciting gravel road this turned out to be! As we started on our way to Cookhouse we crossed the Great Fish River. This road offered spectacular views over the farms in this area. Driving through narrow gorges where only one vehicle could pass through at a time. As we came around one of the many bends in the road before us was something we never expected to see! It was a very old, yet spectacular, tunnel through the mountain. I tried to find out more about it but to no avail. Later we found out that it is known as the Dassiedeur tunnel. Driving through this tunnel was so unexpected and a fantastic experience. I actually got goosebumps! Then it was onwards to the Slagtersnek Pass, an easy pass to navigate to reach Cookhouse. What was really special on this road was all the wildlife we saw as we were travelling.
