Rare footage of a deep-sea hooked squid in its natural habitat was captured earlier this month by a team of scientists from The University of Western Australia (UWA) and Kelpie Geosciences in the UK.

The squid was seen wrapping its arms around a sinking camera it had mistaken for prey in the South Pacific on May 8, north of an area called the Samoan Passage.

Bright bioluminescent lights used to startle prey were seen at the ends of two arms of the squid, which chief scientist Heather Stewart likened to “headlights”.

The squid, which Stewart estimated was around 75 cm (2.5 feet) long, was filmed at a depth of just over 1 km (0.6 mile), according to the UWA.
