Arguably the most powerful brush in any app is the Pattern Brush in Illustrator. Create the brush using any graphics you want in Illustrator. Then change the color of the brush based on the color of the stroke you apply it to. You can also give the brush a "head" and a "tail" to define the beginning and the end of the line.
