The Connected Car/the Autonomous Car are names which are used interchangeably when discussing the future of automobile transportation. The purpose of this panel discussion “A Look Under the Hood of the Connected Car” is to gain some insight into what the current stakeholders are doing in this space. There are Academic Stakeholders, the Auto Manufacturers, the Tiered Suppliers and the 3rd party software system developers who all envision a transportation future defined by the connected car. Each stakeholder in this eco-system has a different vantage point when it comes to the connected car, but together they all are forming the basis for a rapidly growing community.

Speaker Bios

E. Jason Dietrich is an emerging technology and business scout for General Motors. He is a product innovator, business analyst and entrepreneur with experience in automotive, tech, and sustainable transportation. His expertise includes identifying new market opportunities, launching products and evaluating business models for automotive and tech products. Jason received a BA in English Literature at Michigan and an MBA from Michigan - Stephen M. Ross School of Business which included the MBA Exchange Program with the IESE Business School - University of Navarra.

Divya Toopran is a Software Engineer at the Toyota InfoTechnology Center (ITC). Divya has submitted patents on Speech Recognition and Proactive Zone Information. She has a Bachelor of Technology in Electrical and Electronics Engineering from Jawaharlal Nehru Technological University and a MS in Computer Engineering from SJSU.

Nick Sugimoto is the Senior Program Director of Honda Silicon Valley Lab, the open innovation lab of global Honda R&D. Nick oversees Honda’s advanced information technology R&D in Silicon Valley, as well as, strategic partnership globally. Previously, Nick led the corporate venture capital program at Honda where he invested in many innovative startup companies and built strategic R&D partnerships. Prior to that, Nick was a successful entrepreneur leading a series of tech venture companies in both the US and Japan. Nick received his engineering degree from the University of Tokyo and MBA from Haas School of Business at UC Berkeley.

John Suh joined Hyundai Ventures, part of the Hyundai Motor Group, in 2011. Prior to that, he was a Technology and Investment Manager at GM. At Hyundai Ventures, he focuses on strategic, equity investments and external partnerships for accelerating innovation in the following areas: 1) Intersection of mobile devices, apps and digital media, mobile commerce, and automotive industries, 2) cleantech with automotive applications, 3) intelligent systems and technologies, and 4) new business models in automotive development, supply chain, and personal mobility. John works at the intersection of the automotive and Silicon Valley tech industries. John received his B.S. in EE at Kettering University and his M.S. and Ph.D. in Mechanical Engineering at Stanford.

Steve Goldberg joined Venrock in 2009 after having been CEO of several early stage companies including DataRunway, Vidient, Arcwave and CoWave Networks. Prior to that, he was Vice President of R&D at Nokia Internet Communications and VP and General Manager of the Wireless Communications Division at Cylink Corporation. Steve also held senior management and engineering positions at Trimble Navigation and HP. At Venrock, Steve focuses on investments in connectivity, M2M/Internet of Things, robotics and embedded systems. He sits on the Board of Asoka, FutureDial, Red Seal, and Quantenna Communications. Previous board seats include Canesta (Microsoft), Kineto Wireless (Taqua), Newport Media (Atmel), and Teranetics (PLX Technology). Steve received his B.S. and M.S. in Electrical Engineering from Washington and his Ph.D. in EE from UCSB.

Jeff Musson is President of Dynamitenetwork.com, a software development company, specializing in the area of Enterprise focused Websites, Mobile and Automotive Apps, Jeff is an entrepreneur with over 10 years experience. In addition to deploying customized apps for clients, DynamiteAutomotiveApps.com also has developed a suite of automotive apps specialized in the areas of infotainment, car diagnostics and productivity enhancement apps. Jeff received his B.Comm in Business Administration and B. Arts in Political Science from the University of Windsor and his LL.M. at York University - Osgoode Hall Law School
