My quest to stay the night at the oldest hotel in every state in the USA continues…Join me as I explore the halls of The Elms Hotel - the oldest operating hotel in the state of Missouri!

The Elms Hotel is located in the town of Excelsior Springs, MO (located just outside Kansas City). The first hotel was built in 1888, but burned down in 1898 due to a candle in the ballroom, it was rebuilt in 1909 and was again destroyed by fire in 1910 - this time by a fire from the boiler room. The third hotel (which stands today) was opened in 1912 and built with limestone to withstand fires.

The Elms is a magnificent hotel! Natural mineral springs are located all around the grounds of the hotel. The Elms has one of the most unique swimming pools I have ever seen, a circular lap pool that iconic boxer Jack Dempsey warmed up in. In fact President Harry Truman spent the night of his re-election in 1948 at the Elms. Even notorious mobster Al Capone spent time at the Elms, running illegal gambling and throwing gin parties.

The Elms Hotel is also very haunted according to hotel staff and guests. You can even join a nightly ghost tour at the hotel! If you're not into supernatural spirits, you can enjoy the natural ones with a fantastic cocktail menu at the Three Owls Restaurants on the ground floor.
