HOW TO PRONOUNCE THE FRENCH LETTER E // All the Different French Sounds for E

Not sure how to pronounce the French letter E? If you’re a beginner in French (or even a seasoned expert), then you’re not alone. There are three different ways to pronounce the E, and these variations are often difficult French sounds for English speakers to produce. On top of actually pronouncing these sounds, it can also be confusing when it comes to choosing the correct French E sound in any given word. How are you supposed to know that the E in “debout” is different from both of the Es in “prêter,” and that the Es in “prêter” are different from one another? What happens to the pronunciation of a French word when it has an accent aigu (é) as opposed to an accent grave (è)? And what the heck is a circumflex (ê)? Luckily, there are several rules that you can learn in order to choose and pronounce the correct French E every time!

One by one, we’re going to go over all the different French sounds for E – the schwa, the open syllable sound, and the closed syllable sound – and I’ll explain each rule to help you understand when and why each E sound occurs. I’ll also give you lots of explanations and French pronunciation practice. These mini-activities will focus on only one sound at a time, and should prepare you for the final assessment (don’t forget to record your answers so you can see and hear your progress!).
