Stop Stopping the Spinning (It's Brain Development)

If your toddler spins in circles until they fall down laughing, don’t rush to stop them — their brain is asking for input. 🧠

As a pediatric Occupational Therapist, I want parents to understand this: spinning isn’t misbehavior or hyperactivity — it’s called vestibular hunger, and it’s a sign of healthy brain development.

🧩 What You’ll Learn in This Short:

What the vestibular system is and why it’s the foundation of balance, attention, and learning.

Why spinning, swinging, rolling, and tumbling are essential for your toddler’s nervous system.

The science behind vestibular input and how it helps regulate emotions, focus, and body awareness.

How to safely nourish vestibular hunger with intentional, fun movement activities.

💡 Key Takeaways:

1️⃣ Spinning = Brain Fuel. Your child’s vestibular system develops through head movement — spinning is their brain’s way of building balance and coordination.
2️⃣ Stopping the Spinning = Stopping Brain Growth. Restricting this movement doesn’t calm them; it prevents critical neural pathways from developing.
3️⃣ They’ll Stop Naturally. Once their vestibular system gets enough input, they’ll slow down on their own. Forcing stillness doesn’t teach regulation — movement does.

🧠 Safe Ways to Feed Vestibular Hunger (Ages 1–6):

🌀 Spinning Chairs: Let them spin safely while seated (count rotations if needed).

🌳 Swings & Hammocks: Back-and-forth and rotary swings both nourish the balance system.

🤸 Rolling Down Hills or Mats: Great full-body vestibular input.

🤹 Somersaults & Log Rolls: Indoors or outdoors — great for rainy days.

🪀 Movement Circuits: Mix jumping, crawling, spinning, and balancing for a mini sensory circuit.

💬 Tip: Balance spinning with “grounding” input like pushing, pulling, or carrying (heavy work) to help the nervous system reset.

⚠️ OT Pro Tip:

If your child constantly seeks spinning, jumping, or crashing — or if they fear movement altogether — it’s not behavioral. It’s sensory regulation. A balanced sensory diet can transform their focus, mood, and coordination.

💬 Join the Conversation:

Does your toddler spin constantly or avoid it completely? Tell me below 👇 — your experience might help another parent understand what’s really happening in their child’s brain.

🧩 Why This Matters:

The vestibular system is the foundation of all sensory processing — it affects balance, coordination, eye movement, reading, focus, and even emotional control.
When we let kids move, spin, and play freely, we’re not just burning energy — we’re building their brain’s architecture for learning and self-regulation.
