More than 700 000 suspects have been arrested in the country as part of the police's "Operation Shanela" initiative since it was launched. These include over 161 000 suspects wanted for priority crimes including murder, cash-in-transit armed robberies, sexual offences, rape, car hijacking and firearm related offences.
This was recently revealed by the National Commissioner of Police, General Fannie Masemola. And yesterday, The South African Police Service Special Task Force unit rescued 90 undocumented Ethiopian nationals -- including one who was kidnapped last week -- who were allegedly being kept against their will and under inhuman conditions in Sunnydale Ridge in Johannesburg.
To talk more about the fight against crime, we are now joined virtually by General Fannie Masemola, National Police Commissioner.
