This gripping nautical yarn is recounted by the captain of the whaler Mary Jane , who was homeward bound from the Southern Ocean in 1871 with a valuable cargo. As he sat in his cabin, he suddenly heard a "most dismal howl" from the ship's dog, Bosun. Then, a man he had never seen, thin, pale, and haggard, walked into the cabin, glanced at the chart, showed a look of "intense disappointment," and vanished. The captain dismissed it as a dream induced by too much smoking. The next night, the dog's dismal howl sounded again, and the "same wan, emaciated figure" returned, showed the same disappointment, and disappeared. He explained that he had tried to visit a ship three times in his dreams for help, and the last time he felt he had succeeded in his object. When the rescued captain marked his position on a clean chart , he cut his finger, leaving a drop of blood.
