This week we're looking at a whiskey from the next generation of Irish whiskey distillers!

Drumshanbo are a relatively small whiskey distillery, who have been working away for a while now, making good Irish pot still whiskey, and that’s what we’ve got here with their single pot still which spent seven long years in a Marsala wine cask!

Drumshanbo use a mashbill with a mix of malted barley, unmalted barley and Barra Oats. They don’t share the breakdown of malted and unmalted barley, but they have confirmed that 5% of the mashbill is made up of those barra oats. Using oats in a mashbill should add some rounded and creamy notes to balance against the spicy and oily notes which would be typical of an Irish Pot Still whiskey.

This whiskey was distilled in 2017 and is their annual special release for 2024, which means it is seven years old. It was also fully matured in that Marsala cask. The whiskey comes in at 43% ABV, so let’s dive right into it!

Tasting Notes
Nose
It's immediately bright on the nose, with pot still spice and bright fruity red apple and white grape. There's not a lot of peppery spice, but rather layers of baking spices and a touch of nuttiness

Palate
It's spicy, fruity and nutty, with more of the baking spices, dried fruits like raisins and almonds, as well as a rich creamy mouthfeel. On the second sip, the cask influence becomes more apparent, with more of those dried fruits

Finish
The finish is light, but medium-long, with the dried fruits, nuts and spice notes lingering on.

Overall, this is a nice little whiskey, which highlights the impact that a solid amount of time in a good wine cask can have. The whiskey has a spicy and creamy base, with a nice amount of fruity influence to keep it interesting.
