Political tensions continue to rise in Rivers State as major political parties and socio-cultural groups have rejected the impeachment moves against Governor Siminalayi Fubara. The Ijaw National Congress (INC) and the Ijaw Youth Council (IYC) have urged the Rivers State House of Assembly to immediately halt the impeachment process, warning that it poses a threat to democracy and stability.
INC President, Prof. Benjamin Okaba, described the impeachment attempt as an assault on democratic principles rather than an ethnic issue, recalling that the crisis had earlier been resolved after a six-month suspension of the governor and his deputy. He expressed concern over the renewed political confrontation.
IYC President, Dr. Alaye Theophilus, called on lawmakers to focus on governance issues instead of impeachment, insisting that Governor Fubara should be allowed to complete his tenure. He praised the governor’s development efforts and cautioned that sustained political battles only harm residents of the state.
Factions of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in Rivers also rejected the move, describing the impeachment process as untenable and politically motivated. A statement signed by APC chieftain Darlington Nwauju warned lawmakers against being used to destabilize the state, citing existing legal provisions that permit spending within the early months of a fiscal year.
Similarly, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) appealed for restraint, noting that Governor Fubara has made significant concessions to maintain peace. Party leaders urged lawmakers to prioritize stability and governance amid ongoing political realignments and repeated impeachment attempts against the governor.
