The United States has imposed fresh sanctions on Iran’s Interior Minister Eskandar Momeni and several other officials in response to Tehran’s violent crackdown on anti-government protests.

The U.S. Treasury Department stated that Momeni oversees the Law Enforcement Forces of the Islamic Republic, which have been linked to the deaths of thousands of peaceful protesters. Additional restrictions target digital currency exchanges connected to Iranian financier Babak Zanjani, which processed funds associated with IRGC-linked entities.

Under the sanctions, any assets held within the U.S. by the designated individuals or entities are frozen, and American companies or citizens are barred from conducting business with them, with violations subject to severe penalties.

The move comes as European Union foreign ministers agreed to designate Iran’s powerful Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) as a terrorist organisation, placing it in the same category as the Islamic State and al Qaeda.
