Guenter Buhles: Music for Strings and Percussion, was composed in 1987 and premiered in 2004. It is dedicated by the composer to musicians he met in person. Buhles does not try to copy their musical concepts. Instead he strengthens his own "European Standpoint" (which is the subtitle of the work). So he is remembering the talks he had with those famous musicians, for example the conductor Pierre Boulez, former principal of the New York Philharmonic, the New Yorker avangardist John Cage and the American jazz composer Duke Ellington. The work conists of four movements that span from a quasi-avantgarde 12-tone concept to a ballad with postmodern neo-romantic lyrical expression.
