In Japan: New law to promote LGBTQ+ understanding takes effect

🏳️‍⚧️🏳️‍🌈🇯🇵 Japan had no laws expressly prohibiting discrimination against gender minorities, or protecting the right to same sex marriage. A situation often criticised by other countries. However, it does not mean that Japanese society and the government were completely silent or ignorant on this issue.

Last year, Japan parliament passed a new law, Promoting Citizens’ Understanding regarding the Diversity of Sexual Orientation and Gender Identity, which aims to promote awareness towards the LGBTQ community. This law became the first law to deal with discrimination against the LGBTQ community in Japan.

The Japanese government declared that by establishing the new law, they will work hard to promote a society, in which all people respect each other's human rights and dignity, alongside living a lively life as a big diverse society.
