Titanium is a notoriously tough material, often avoided by newer machinists due to its reputation for tool wear, heat buildup, and difficult chip control. In this test, we explored how the Tormach 1500MX CNC mill performs when cutting Grade 23 titanium using conservative feeds and speeds.

For this test, we used two tools from Tormach's steel tooling kit: a four-flute 1/8 inch end mill and a four-flute 5/16 inch end mill. These were the same tools previously used in a 304 stainless steel cutting demo. Using pre-worn tools provided us with insight into how the 1500MX handles titanium under less-than-ideal conditions.

Both tools were run at 250 surface feet per minute. For the 1/8 inch tool, that translated to around 7,600 RPM, while the larger 5/16 inch tool ran at approximately 3,000 RPM. The feed rate was about 23 inches per minute, equating to roughly .0018 to .0019 thousandths per tooth. The titanium cutting strategy was a 2D adaptive roughing pass at a 10 percent step-over and a quarter-inch depth of cut.

Despite the conservative setup, the results were very encouraging. The machine maintained stable loads throughout, and there were no signs of chatter or excessive heat. Even with tools that had already seen considerable use, the finish was clean and consistent, and chip evacuation was not a problem.
