Meniscal tears are common injuries that may result in pain and functional limitation. Treatment options include benign neglect, rehabilitation, meniscectomy, and repair. Nonsurgical care can be used for older patients with degenerative meniscal pathology. Meniscectomy remains a viable and successful intervention for pain relief and functional improvement for symptomatic meniscal tears in appropriately indicated patients. However, it results in an increase in contact stresses in the articular cartilage of the affected compartment, leading to osteoarthritis. Meniscus repair provides improved long-term outcomes, better clinical outcomes, and less degenerative changes compared with meniscectomy.
