One of the distinctive features of the Fl 282 was its tandem rotor system, where two intermeshing rotors were mounted on outriggers on either side of the helicopter. This design provided excellent stability and control. The helicopter was designed to be compact and easily transportable. It could fit into a small space on naval vessels and could be transported by truck or trailer. The Fl 282 was powered by a Bramo Sh 14A radial engine, which provided 160 horsepower. This engine was mounted in the center fuselage, beneath the rotor mast. The primary military applications of the Fl 282 were reconnaissance, artillery spotting, and liaison duties. It was intended to be used by the German Navy for operations from U-boats and other vessels. Due to the challenges of wartime production and the eventual collapse of Nazi Germany, only a limited number of Fl 282 helicopters were produced. The exact number is estimated to be around 24 to 30 units. While the Fl 282 underwent testing and demonstrated promising capabilities, it saw limited operational use during World War II. It never became a major factor in the conflict. Despite its limited wartime role, the Fl 282 had a lasting impact on helicopter design and development. The tandem rotor configuration was later used in other helicopter designs, and the lessons learned from the Fl 282 contributed to future advancements in helicopter technology. A few surviving Flettner Fl 282 helicopters can be found in aviation museums around the world, serving as a reminder of this unique and innovative wartime helicopter design.
