The town of Fuengirola is known as Suel and then Suhayl in the ancient times. It is a large town and municipality on the Costa del Sol in the province of Málaga. It is a major tourist resort, with more than 8km (5 miles) of beaches and a medieval Moorish fortress.

The town has its origins in Phoenician, Roman and Arab civilisations. Currently, Fuengirola is an important tourist center with around 250,000 inhabitants during the summer season and whose economy revolves in this sector.

In the 1960s the town started to become one of the leading tourist centers, and eventually constructing the facilities for lodging, eating, and entertainment. The town has broad beaches along a promenade extending east and west from the town, including the smaller adjacent villages. Largely urban in character, the town has many high-rise blocks of flats near the seafront and elsewhere. There are also some narrow streets with many low-rise villas.

The approximately 72,000 permanent inhabitants registered in the municipality, 25% come from other countries, mainly European, and also from Morocco and Argentinian. In the summer, the town plays host to varieties of visitors both Spanish and foreign, but in particular British.

The Mercado La Galería has a wide variety of national and international culinary specialties in the vibrant atmosphere. These specialties include Mexican cuisine, Spanish food, Italian, Greek, Japanese, seafoods, grilled meats, croquettes and cafeterias. It offers the concept of casual dining with quality food in a relaxed atmosphere.

Fuengirola has a number of historical sites and open parks. The old port is still used by the local fishermen. The Suhail castle hosts festivals and concerts during the summer. The Bioparc Fuengirola zoo is also open for everyone who loves animals.
