Hey Guys! Thanks for stopping by my channel! In this video I'm running through some sounds using the Seymour Duncan Hot Rails Bridge Pickup that I have Installed In my Fender Stratocaster.

First, a quick back story of why I decided to swap out the stock single coil for the Seymour Duncan hot rail. I really did it purely because I wanted to get some more versatility out of my Stratocaster.

I wanted to be able to use this as my main guitar for sessions and gigs. My thoughts were, no ones really gonna complain if you turn up with a Strat, It looks the part and they’ve been used on pretty much every record in history, A Strat in my opinion is probably one of the most versatile guitars out there and with the 5 different pickup variations it gives a lot of solid base tones to choose from depending on what kind of music you’re playing or whatever song. But obviously, like any Instrument, it has it’s limitations. The one for me was not being able to get that thick hum bucker sound.

And for some of the gigs I’ve been doing over the last year, I needed to be able to access those sounds quickly without taking the time to change guitars and tune up and all the complications that come with going back and forth with several guitars all night.

So I could have just stuck a full sized hum bucker in there, but I wanted the freedom to be able to put the single coil back in there If I wanted. It’s a fairly inexpensive investment and it’s really simple to install, and it does the job that I want it to do.

The Seymour Duncan Hot Rail is essentially a hum bucker design scaled down to the size of a single coil. And it does this by utilising a single magnet rail design as opposed to your traditional hum bucker design of two 6 pole magnet pickups. So if you’ve got a Strat or a tele with single coils, but you wanna be able to get that thick and creamy hum bucker sound and feel for a bit more versatility. This allows you to do so without having to commit to routing out a huge hole in your beloved guitar to fit a regular sized hum bucker. So if thats your issue, Problem solved.

Does it sound exactly like a hum bucker? No, not really. Not to me anyway. I’d say it comes pretty close, It has the same benefits of a hum bucker, one obviously being the lack of “hum” you’d get from a typical single coil pickup. It also has the big and rich harmonic sound that hum buckers are known for. But it also has a few of it’s own unique characteristics that I think actually make it really cool.

One thing I’ve noticed in particular is in the mid range. This pickup is very accentuated in the mids compared to a traditional hum bucker, and just makes it sound huge.

The thing Im not particularly a fan of, is the sound of it on cleans…It doesn’t react like a usual bridge hum bucker to my ears, those pushed mids that I mentioned can make it sound quite honky and muffled which I’m personally not a big fan of for cleans. I’m not against honky sounds, I love the sound of an AC30 with that kind of vocal-like mids that you get, but that’s completely different to the way this pickup reacts to a clean sound, it’s fine if you were after that particular sound…but just for my personal taste, I tend to steer away from it for clean tones. But at the end of the day, like the name suggests, this is a hot pickup, so it’s specifically designed more towards the rock and drive tones. So for any sound from break up to full on overdrive and distortion, this thing absolutely screams.

Thanks for watching and stopping by my channel! I appreciate it!

Catch ya next time...
