Long Table 201. Bronzes of the First Jewish Revolt: The Yoke of Roman Botanical Imperialism

In the fourth year of the First Jewish Revolt against Rome (69-70 CE), there was a radical shift in the iconography of the bronze coins issued by the leading parties of the Revolt. These new coins depict plants related to the Jewish holiday of Sukkot, the fall harvest festival. Scholars have long questioned the meaning of the iconographic shift: Arielle Suskin (Case Western Reserve University and 2024 ANS Summer Seminar participant) takes a novel approach to frame the botanical images within the economic and social history of Judaea under Roman rule, and Rome’s reaction to the Judaean rejection of their imperialist policies.
