Welcome to “The Dad Project”.

In this installment my dad, Pete Purvis, gets bit.

A pilot in their cockpit is always on alert for the unexpected. A lot of what ifs--what if my engine dies? what if my radio dies? what if I have a bird strike? There are checklists for many anomolies, but there is no checklist for your own missile striking your airplane.

But my dad and his RIO, Tank Sherman, had the ultimate get out of jail card for just such an instance--the ejection seat. In a fraction of a second their ejection seats would remove them from their peril and instant membership in the Catipillar Club.

It would also be an experience that would indelibly, with one flight, mark him as the man who was introduced as , "I'd like you to meet the pilot who shot himself down." That short .4 hour flight was just a blip in the other 450 hrs he would spend test flying this magnificant machine.

This is my effort to tell my dad’s story through the planes he flew. His first flight was on November 8th, 1957, and his last was on September 10, 1998.

I had hoped that my dad would be on camera telling me these stories, but he died recently, so I am telling his story for him. I have his autobiography, his flight logs that tells a precise story of landings and takeoffs that should equal the other except for one fateful flight on June 20th, 1973. More on that in a future installment

If I am successful, “The Dad Project” will span a minimum of thirty-eight installments. One installment for each type of plane he flew. From the antiquated DC-6B to the wonders and exhilaration of the F-14.

Recorded with a Professional Condenser Microphone through the Atomos Ninja V Monitor. Video recorded with the Ninja V Monitor. Took me a while to remember, too, my Parrot Teleprompter (fantastic piece of kit).

Lights used—Pixel G1s RGB Video Light, Viltrox L116T and a Neewer CB60 60W LED Video Light with Softbox.
