How To Build A Sauna Outdoors

ADVENTURE: Jordon Bell Season 8 Alone joins me and friends in Bridget National Park where he used his carpentry skills and wilderness survival techniques to build a sauna or sweat lodge. We gathered large rocks from the mountainside near the Greys River into a truck and hauled them to our campground where we put them in a burning hot fire. We continued building the sauna using a couple tarps, a beach sun shade also used for sporting events, rope, trimmed branches from trees, and clips to seal it shut the best we could. After the rocks had been in the fire for 6 hours they were the color orange. We lifted them into the sauna lodge with a camp shovel. Five men were able to fit comfortably in the sauna. We had a bucket of water and a cup to pour on the molten rocks. As a heart transplant recipient I didn't know how my body would react. The heat was above 120 degrees and the steam burned my nose in the beginning. Overall, it was a spiritual experience because we chose to honor one another rather than tease each other. It was an adventure I highly recommend.

"Before my heart transplant I wasn't able to do many outdoor activities. Since then I'm blessed to travel the world, explore, and create beautiful memories I want to share with you in hopes you'll also be encouraged when things get hard." -Paul Cardall

Sauna bathing, an activity that has been a tradition in Finland for thousands of years and mainly used for the purposes of pleasure and relaxation, is becoming increasingly popular in many other populations. Emerging evidence suggests that beyond its use for pleasure, sauna bathing may be linked to several health benefits, which include reduction in the risk of vascular diseases such as high blood pressure, cardiovascular disease, and neurocognitive diseases; nonvascular conditions such as pulmonary diseases; mortality; as well as amelioration of conditions such as arthritis, headache, and flu. The beneficial effects of sauna bathing on these outcomes have been linked to its effect on circulatory, cardiovascular, and immune functions. It has been postulated that regular sauna bathing may improve cardiovascular function via improved endothelium-dependent dilatation, reduced arterial stiffness, modulation of the autonomic nervous system, beneficial changes in circulating lipid profiles, and lowering of systemic blood pressure.
