The main role of packaging is to protect the food from environmental conditions and influences, including biological agents, so that it can be stored, handled, and distributed with decreased risks of contamination and deterioration. However, food packaging should not be seen only as a protection for food as many other functions and aspects are connected to it. How can we ensure that packaging materials are sustainable yet safe for the consumers? Could we use convenient smart packaging to control stocks? Could safe packaging materials be re-used in a circular economy to reduce their environmental impact?

During this webinar, we will explore key concepts in food packaging functionality, convenience and how those aspects can be balanced with sustainability and safety. The webinar will be concluded by an introduction to the Packaging Materials Task Force of ILSI Europe and ILSI Europe activities related to food packaging.
