The simple present form of be (am, is, are) is used when the subject of the sentence is linked to the complement, meaning that what comes after the be is what the subject is about. The complement may come in the form of a noun, an adjective, or a prepositional phrase. The be is also used when the subject of the sentence is put in the present continuous tense, or in a passive voice.
