The play's the thing, but so's the film.

The works of William Shakespeare have been adapted for the screen since the early days of cinema. I actually used to say it was impossible to successfully translate the plays to film without changing the language or doing something radical. Evidently I changed my mind, and here are four of my all-time favourite Shakespeare adaptations.

NOTE: The minor character of Fleance, Banquo's son in Macbeth is who James I was descended from (he was also James VI of Scotland). The witches tell Banquo that his descendants will become kings, and Fleance escapes when Macbeth sends murderers after them.

And no need to point out that Irene Jacob is Swiss-French.
