It turned out that the guy was a baggage handler who had taken a nap - apparently a common activity among ramp employees, particularly when there are delays. His coworkers later said that they had called his name a few times and when he didn't respond, they assumed he had gone home early.

The guy woke up when a bag fell on his head during takeoff, at which point he sent his mother an "I love you" goodbye message, called his job, called 911, and began screaming and banging on the ceiling [the floor of the main cabin].

Although still employed as a baggage handler, Alaska Airlines has banned him from working on their aircraft.
