Описание к видео Improving outcomes for children by reducing arguments at home | ESRC Celebrating Impact Prize

Arguments between parents are a natural part of life, but when these are frequent and poorly resolved, there can be a negative impact on children’s mental health and their future.

Statistically, parental conflict is twice as likely in families where both parents are unemployed compared to where both are working. There is support for economically disadvantaged families which promote positive parenting practices, and these often focus on improving the relationship between parent and child. However, research by Professor Gordon Harold at the University of Cambridge has shown that supporting relationships between parents – regardless of whether they are living together – is more effective at improving outcomes for both children, as well as the adults involved.

Professor Harold’s research has helped shape the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) Reducing Parental Conflict (RPC) Programme, which has supported thousands of parents to better manage their conflict, leading to improved well-being for their children.

The Reducing parental conflict to improve outcomes for children project, led by Professor Gordon Harold is shortlisted for the ESRC Celebrating Impact Prize 2024. The Prize, now in its 12th year, is an opportunity to recognise the success of ESRC-funded researchers in achieving and enabling outstanding economic or societal impact from their research.
