This computer generated display demonstrates how the human visual system is capable of taking the apparent movement of an array of dots and extracting a signal for determining direction of motion. There is extensive evidence that optic flow (also known as optical flow) is used to inform steering control when driving.

In this example there is structure in the layout of the dots (they are closer together near the horizon) which is consistent with them lying upon a single ground surface. The overall movement of all the dots provides compelling self-motion signals despite the observer being static in the world. Note that no information about the direction of travel is available when the scene is static - it is only dot motion that provides that information.
