Emilie Mayer (1812-1883)

Emilie Luise Friderica Mayer was a German composer and very successful in her time. She was even called the 'female Beethoven'. She was the eldest daughter of a wealthy pharmacist. Her mother died when Emilie was 2 years old. When she was 5, she received a grand piano and was given music lessons. When she was 28 her father committed suicide, leaving Mayer with a large inheritance. In 1841 she moved to Stettin (then in Germany but now called Szczecin in Poland) where she became a composition student of Carl Loewe. In 1847, after the premiere of her first two symphonies by the Stettin Instrumental Society, she moved to Berlin to continue her composition studies. She began publishing her works and performing in concerts and traveled to attend performances of her works, including to Cologne, Munich, Lyon, Brussels and Vienna. In 1850 Mayer organized a concert in the Royal Theatre in Berlin, dedicated entirely to her own music. Gradually, her fame grew and her music was heard in such important cultural centers as Leipzig, Brussels, Vienna and Budapest. She was awarded the gold medal of art from the Queen of Prussia. She composed in all genres and left behind a large oeuvre, including six piano trios, string quartets, eight violin sonatas, twelve cello sonatas, a piano concerto, concert overtures and eight symphonies, as well as an opera.
