In this second episode of our Making of England Series we look at the events surrounding the Battle of Edington (or Ethandun), King Alfred the Great's history-changing triumph in the year of 878 AD.

Following Ashdown in 871, Alfred fought a series of battles alongside his brother King Æthelred, the latter dying of wounds in April of 871. This made Alfred the last of the sons of Æthelwulf to take up the kingship.

Having been swiftly crowned, Alfred moved to counter the building threat of Guthrum, with late 877-8 being the lowest ebb of his fortunes. Alfred ruled Wessex at perhaps the worse time in history.

Yet even in this darkest hour, hope remained. This video tells the story of arguably one of the greatest come-backs in history.
