Orphism is the name given to a set of religious beliefs and practices originating in the ancient Greek and Hellenistic world, as well as from the Thracians, associated with literature ascribed to the mythical poet Orpheus, who descended into the Greek underworld and returned. Orphics revered Dionysus and Persephone. Lecture over, Orphic is probably David’s finest work to date. Thrusting, majestic and a fine example of how melodic trance can be done.
