Tom Werber, director: "The main challenge of this project was to somehow fuse the music of Losers - this heavy, epic, electro-grime, with the visual style of Dan Hillier's illustration work, which is based on Victorian and Edwardian engravings.

"I looked at lots of sources for inspiration, from Terry Gilliam's 'Python' animations to Max Ernst's 'Une Semaine de Bonté' to H.P. Lovecraft. Ultimately the inspiration came from the music itself, which has such a rude energy that it was clear the video shouldn't take itself too seriously. That said, I wanted to do something that Gilliam's 'Python' work and Ernst didn't do in terms of creating a storyline and a world that extended throughout the whole piece.

"To some extent I think all those artists express the seething, bestial aspect of human nature that polite society tries to suppress. The genteel façade of Victorian England seems like the ultimate attempt to do that - which makes it all the more shocking when the beast erupts out of it. That idea fit well with the rage-filled lyrics of the song, and I wanted to take this and just go very over-the-top with it, take it into 'Godzilla vs Mothra' territory!

"We had a fantastic resource in all these incredible engravings for which the copyright has lapsed, but creating the main characters from all the viewing angles we needed was a challenge, because those illustrations didn't exist. It involved a lot of cutting up and manipulating of images in Photoshop to make those main characters.

"Character animation in After Effects can be a tricky business, since the software is not really designed for it. I did end up using a lot of simple scripting to rig some of the characters - like Victoria and Albert - which made things easier. Since the style was so inspired by Gilliam I actually wanted to preserve some of the naïvety and jerkiness of his animation. On one occasion that meant asking David (Gray) not to animate quite so well."

Schedule: originally two months, extended to three.
