Fix water damaged MDF particle board (bye bubbles)

You can fix swollen MDF and bubbles!

MDF, or medium density fiberboard, is a stronger, denser particle board. It made of wood fibre bound together by adhesive. Unfortunately, contact with the water will cause the MDF to swell, causing bubbles.

To fix bubbles, first clean.

Then sand it down to make it flat. I started at 180 and ended at 220. One you’ve exposed the mdf, it will looks rough since it is small wood fibers just glued together - it is not smooth. Use wood filler to fill in- and make sure you are getting into all the crevices.

Then prime with shellac primer. I opted just to spot prime since this primer is expensive and white. Since I knew I was painting black, grey primer is better choice.

Sand down the primer with 400 or higher grit for a smooth buttery finish, then paint!
