The PRINCE2 (2017) Processes cover the chronological flow of the project, and drive the project management related activity throughout the life of the project.

The Themes are continuously applied within the processes, describing various aspects of project management which need to be applied throughout the project. Applying the themes will help to support the principles.

Tailoring the method to each individual project is key to its successful application, as project’s are different and therefore need to be managed differently based on their size, complexity, level of risk etc.

Projects will be influenced by internal standards, policies, procedures, governance etc, as well as influenced by external rules and regulations that are relevant to that particular project. This in turn will influence how PRINCE2 will be applied.

Project Environment is the need to tailor. Tailoring examples can be found in the PRINCE2 Manual, with emphasis on different environments such as:
simple project
commercial customer/supplier considerations
in a programme environment
when using an agile delivery approach.

Narrative: PRINCE2 reflects the requirements of project management with four integrated elements of principles, themes, processes and ‘tailoring to the project environment’.

The seven principles are guiding obligations that determine whether or not the project is being managed using PRINCE2. All the principles can and should be applied to any project regardless of type, nature and size.

The principles are supported by the PRINCE2 Themes. Each of the themes gives advice and guidance on carrying out different aspects of project management. All seven themes must be applied to each PRINCE2 project, but should be tailored appropriately to the project’s environment.

The PRINCE2 processes describe the chronological flow of the project. Each of the seven processes will use a number of themes to drive the project forward. Each process contains a number of activities which advises what the project should be addressing at any given time. The activities within the processes develop the management products and information for effective decision-making.

Tailoring PRINCE2 to the project environment helps to ensure that its use is appropriate and effective. Careful thought is needed during tailoring to make sure that the controls are not watered-down. By the same token, heavy use of the controls can be as inappropriate, resulting in unnecessary and excessive management overheads.
