African mothers move together toward the old village well, their colorful khanga and kitenge cloths bright against the warm, dusty ground. The sun is still rising, and the air is filled with soft morning sounds. Before they can fetch the water, they kneel down and begin to dig into the shallow well, loosening the soil with their hands and small containers. Slowly, the earth releases its water, and a clear pool begins to form at the bottom.

As the water gathers, the cattle wander closer, their hooves pressing softly into the soil. They lower their heads and drink from the freshly exposed water, sharing the well with the women. The mothers wait patiently, chatting and laughing, watching the water become clearer as it settles. Once it is clean enough, they begin filling their yellow jerrycans, ready to carry the precious water back home.
