The corner of a microscope slide showing the crystallization of liquid crystal. This particular liquid crystal is Cholesteryl acetate, a chemical used in the manufacturing of liquid crystal displays (LCDs), wrist watches, thermometers, and even cosmetics. I melted tiny pure white crystals, synthesized by Marcel Vogel in the 1970s (read more below), and the crystallization occurs as they cool down in temperature. A liquid crystal is fascinating State of Matter that can both flow like a fluid, and also shows some ordering properties of crystal. The molecules act like a liquid and a crystalline solid at the same time. You can watch the molecules going through the different phase transitions, ultimately forming perfectly round circles of macro crystals.

I filmed this with an Olympus BX-51 compound microscope under polarized light, which directs photons of light in specific directions. When the first crystallization completed, I manually twisted the polarizer to create the color-shifting effect. When the circles shrink and disappear after, you're seeing the same footage played in reverse.

I mentioned that the liquid crystals were synthesized by Marcel Vogel. A fascinating figure, Marcel Vogel (1917–1991) was an IBM research scientist and eventually an occultist. During his time at IBM's Data Products Division, Vogel invented many things. His research and inventions in the fields of liquid crystals, photo relays, and rare earth phosphors led to massive contributions to build today's LCD displays, watches, and radios. Later in his career, Vogel became interested in various theories of quartz crystals and other occult and esoteric fields of study. He developed the Vogel crystal cut meant to focus a person's energy. To Vogel it seems, science and magic were inextricable.
