Britney Schmidt and collaborators are publishing two papers in Nature on February 15, 2023 related to melting rates, and how melting occurs, at Thwaites Glacier – the hottest glacier in Antarctica.

The papers rely on first-of-their-kind observations taken by Icefin, a remotely operated vehicle developed by the team. Schmidt is an associate professor of astronomy and earth and atmospheric sciences in the College of Arts and Sciences and Cornell Engineering.

Field footage of Icefin has been contributed by the Icefin team, funded by NASA and NSF. Field work in Antarctica was supported by the United States Antarctic Program, the British Antarctic Survey, and Antarctica New Zealand.
