NDT means Non-Destructive Testing.

👉 It is a group of testing methods used to inspect, test, or evaluate materials, components, or structures without causing damage to them.
That means after inspection, the part being tested can still be used.

👉Definition*

Non-Destructive Testing (NDT) is a testing and analysis technique used in science and industry to evaluate the properties of a material, component, or system for discontinuities (defects), differences in material properties, or welding quality without permanently altering the tested object.

👉Purpose of NDT*

•To detect defects or irregularities (cracks, porosity, corrosion, etc.)
•To ensure safety and reliability of equipment and structures.
•To save cost and time (no wastage of materials)
•To check quality during manufacturing and maintenance.

👉Common NDT Methods*

1. Visual Testing (VT) – using eyes, magnifiers, cameras, borescopes.
2. Liquid Penetrant Testing (LPT / PT) – uses dye/fluorescent liquid to detect surface cracks.
3. Magnetic Particle Testing (MPT / MT) – detects surface & near-surface cracks in ferromagnetic materials.
4. Ultrasonic Testing (UT) – uses high-frequency sound waves to detect internal flaws and thickness.
5. Radiographic Testing (RT) – uses X-rays or Gamma rays to check internal defects.
6. Eddy Current Testing (ET) – uses electromagnetic induction for detecting cracks and measuring conductivity.
7. Leak Testing (LT) – used to find leaks in pressure vessels, pipelines, tanks, etc.
8. Acoustic Emission Testing (AE) – listens to sound waves emitted by materials under stress.
