In this Hyfindr Expo Highlights, at the 2024 Hydrogen Technology Expo, Tobias Freitag from Burckhardt Compression showcased a range of hydrogen compressors, from compact, containerized systems for trailer filling to large-scale piston compressors for high-capacity applications. Their container solution offers a standalone, plug-and-play setup with two zones for safety and all necessary controls, cooling systems, and an air-to-water cooler, although it must be fixed to the ground upon installation.
Freitag also presented Burckhardt’s advanced piston compressors, which are scalable in size and designed for high-capacity needs, supporting up to 20 tons of hydrogen per day. This technology allows for flexible use across various hydrogen applications, including trailer filling, hydrogen storage, and potentially large-scale hydrogen production. Compared to membrane compressors, the piston design can handle higher throughputs and higher capacities, making it suitable for extensive, high-demand operations.
Additionally, Freitag highlighted Burckhardt’s involvement in liquid hydrogen production and compression for lower-pressure applications like pipelines and ammonia synthesis. Looking ahead, Burckhardt is focusing on increasing pressure capacities up to 900 bar for trailer filling and fuel stations. They are building a test center to explore non-lubricated compression at these elevated pressures, pushing forward the scalability and reliability of hydrogen infrastructure.
