There are five common sets of numbers, namely the set of natural numbers (ℕ), the set of integers (ℤ), the set of rational numbers (ℚ), the set of real numbers (ℝ), and the set of complex numbers (ℂ). Specifically,
ℕ = {0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, 10, 11, 12,…}
ℤ = {…, -5, -4 , -3, -2, -1, 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5,…}
ℚ = {p/q | p, q ∈ ℤ and q ≠ 0}
ℚ = {..., -49.316, -1, -0.1(6), 0, 4/3, 2.(6), 10.(3), 263/17, 29,...}
ℝ = {..., -85π, -9.082, -√7, -2, 0, 0.1(6), √2, φ, 4, 5e, 12√53, 26.0518πe,…}
ℂ = {a + bi | a, b ∈ ℝ and i = √-1}
If one adds negative integers to ℕ, one obtains ℤ. If one adds fractions to ℤ, one obtains ℚ. If one adds surds and transcendental numbers to ℚ, one obtains ℝ. Lastly, if one adds imaginary numbers to ℝ, one obtains ℂ. In other words, ℕ is a subset of ℤ; ℤ is a subset of ℚ; ℚ is a subset of ℝ; and ℝ is a subset of ℂ.
