The Boston Tea Party took place on December 16, 1773, and was a key event leading up to the American Revolutionary War. In protest of the Tea Act, which allowed the British East India Company to sell tea directly to the colonies, a group of American colonists known as the Sons of Liberty boarded British ships in Boston Harbor and dumped 342 chests of tea into the water. Disguised as Mohawk Indians to conceal their identities, the protesters sent a powerful message of defiance to British authorities.
