Zhangjiajie National Park is located in the central-eastern area of China in the Wulingyuan Scenic Area which features multiple protected areas. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is one of the world's, most breathtaking scenic areas. The national park encompasses an area of 18.59 square miles (48.15 sq km). It is a GANP Ambassador Park.The larger Wulingyuan Scenic Area covers 153.5 square miles (397.5 sq km). The collective Wulingyuan area is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Zhangjiajie National Forest Park is probably the most coveted part of the area.

The park is comprised of dense forests, deep ravines, deep canyons, unusual peaks, caves, and pillar-like rock formations blanketed throughout the park. These pillar rock formations are what the park is renowned for around the world.The pillar rock formations are not typical limestone-eroded pillars. The pillar rock formations are comprised of quartz-sandstone and formed from physical erosion caused by the abundant rains.
Yuanjiajie Scenic Area:
Yuanjiajie Scenic Area, known originally as Qingyuan Mountain, is located in the northern part of Zhangjiajie Forest Park. This famous mountainous area provided the inspiration for the floating mountains of the movie Avatar, and is known for its misty, beautiful karst topography.The highlights of Yuanjiajie include the First Bridge under Heaven, Avatar Hallelujah Mountain, and 'Lost Souls Platform'.The fame of Hallelujah Mountain and the views mean there are always crowds in this area, especially during peak travel season when you may find it hard to find a place free of people for photos.
Tianzi Mountain:
The Mountains are quartz sandstone and were formed about 400 million years ago through irregular rising patterns of the earths crust, and with about 318 million years of erosion these tall and skinny mountains were formed. Furthermore, the erosion has created distinct, stratified layers that have developed different coloring and shape over the years of exposure to the elements. Meanwhile, younger and less eroded mountains also dot these mountains, further contributing to the unique variety of mountain formations found here.
Tianzi Mountain offers the best chance of photographing asea of clouds, mainly during spring or early autumn.Don't miss the cable car up to this area. The 30-minute ride will take you through the towering formations and give you the opportunity to take great fly-by photos. If your time permits, you can visit Ten-Mile Gallery where you can take a monorail train. After the train, you can hike up to Tianzi Mountain.
Golden Whip Stream Facts: Golden Whip Stream (Jinbianxi), or Golden Whip Brook is a part of Wulingyuan Scenic and Historic Interest Area, the natural heritage of the world. The stream, with 7.5 km's length, is named after one of the 10 wonders of Zhangjiajie - Golden Whip Rock. Golden Whip Stream Scenic area has various kinds of plants and animals, and peaks and rocks of different appearances alongside. The trail along the stream is the most stunning hiking trail in Wulingyuan.
Yellow Stone Village:
Zhangjiajie Huangshizhai or Yellowstone Village has an altitude of 1,080 meters. Instead of a village, it is actually a square shaped plateau formed by quartz sand. The terrain is high in the southwest and low in the northeast.
Surrounded by cliffs, the flat top of Huangshizhai or Yellowstone Village has an area of 16.5 hectares with the largest and the most beautiful observation deck overlooking the sandstone mountains.
Yangjiajie Scenic Area:
Yangjiajie is a newly developed area of the park. It is the least-crowded area, with spectacular scenery and challenging hiking. Yangjiajie Scenic Area involves a lot of hard and steep climbing - about 2 hours up. The steepest path is made up of slippery stone steps, going up at 70 degrees and only allowing people to pass sideways.
Old House Area:
Old House Area is an undeveloped part of Zhangjiajie National Forest Park. As it is well off the ordinary travel route
