Today’s Doodle honors Brazil’s Independence Day or as it's known in Portuguese, Sete de Setembro (September Seventh). Referencing the book, Linha do Tempo do Design Gráfico Brasileiro, London-based guest artist Arthur Vergani illustrates a vintage stamp from Brazilian design history to interpret the colors and significance of the Brazilian flag.

Today’s Doodle artwork acknowledges the history of printing and its connection to independence. With few exceptions, the first printed materials and typographies only started being produced nationally after independence. One of the most remarkable pieces of this early stage in print production are stamps named Olho de boi (bull’s eye)—noted as the second international stamp produced in the world.

The Doodle’s design is also inspired by the Brazilian flag and its 27 stars reflect the Southern Hemispheric constellations such as the Southern Cross, the Greater Dog, and the Water Serpent—representing Brazil’s 27 states, too. Twenty-seven stars rest in the borders of the Doodle and the green, yellow and blue letters mimic the color order of the flag.
