The Northern Territory government is dealing with a “generation” of children and young adults who were abandoned by their parents, says former NT child protection minister John Elferink.

“We’re dealing with a generation which is essentially abandoned by many of their parents to walk the streets of the Northern Territory,” he told Sky News Australia.

“Those kids ultimately become very vulnerable through that process, either at the hands of each other or at the hands of adults in some of these remote and regional communities.

“This has been an ongoing issue for a number of years, in fact, for as long as I’ve lived in the Northern Territory and it has become more recently pronounced.”
