A playthrough of Wisdom Tree's 1993 unlicensed party game for the NES, Bible Buffet.

Bible Buffet is a four-player, party-style board game that feels like a distant 8-bit ancestor of the Mario Party series. You spin the wheel at the beginning of each turn to determine the number of spaces you can move. If you land on a regular space, you'll be whisked off to action-based minigame that involves whacking enemies and collecting food. Landing on a question space will send you to a trivia minigame where you can earn a star, and the special spaces dotted throughout reward and penalize you in various ways. Once everyone has reached the end, the game hands outs three awards (for first to finish, most food collected, and most trivia stars earned), and whoever wins the most awards is declared the victor.

It was a novel game concept in its time, and it's entertaining the first couple of times through. It doesn't have much staying power, but for a Wisdom Tree game, this is pretty decent. The digitized voices sound good, too.

It's funny, though. Games based on Bible stories were Wisdom Tree's schtick, but perhaps more than any other game in their catalog, Bible Buffet highlights how the company's religious slant was more of a means to an end than it was an expression of faith. It was a way to avoid being sued into oblivion by Nintendo. The only thing that makes Bible Buffet a "religious game" is the title. I mean, sure, the quiz minigame is based on Bible trivia, but the questions aren't even in the game itself. You have to look up them up in the booklet that came packed in with the game.
