Описание к видео Groundwater Storage Depletion in Pakistan and India from space and ground-based observations

Speaker: Dr. Muhammad Zeeshan Ali

Topic: Groundwater Storage Depletion in Pakistan and India from space and ground-based observations

Abstract

The groundwater resource depletion threatens the water supply and food production globally. However, the consequence of groundwater extraction and climate variability on groundwater storage is still serious. The annual storage variations and its depletion distribution need to be investigated. Groundwater storage (GWS) changes in South Asia are derived from the integration of the products of GRACE and its follow-on mission and Global Land Data Assimilation System data for 18 cars between 2003 and 2020. The hotspot area of GWS depletion was found in Northwest India (Rajasthan, Haryana and Uttaranchal states). The trend analysis shows that GWS is facing a 6.2 cm annually decreasing trend in Uttaranchal state from 2003-2017. The GWS change can be approximated from the major component of TWS anomaly in hotspot areas in Uttaranchal. The result shows that the long-term GWS changes have been identified for 18 years. The GWS accumulative drop happened in Northwest India. In addition, the results of monthly GRACE-based GWS are validated with the ground monitoring wells data, which are highly correlated with the former (R': 0.667 to 0.926). The current study results suggest that Northwest India is facing serious issues of groundwater depletion which needs to be mitigated by government organizations.
